Dholera Special Investment Region is strategically located within the Saurashtra peninsula at a distance of 100 kilometers each from the Dedicated Freight Corridorand Ahmedabad and 130 Kmsfrom Gandhinagar. Situated in the Gulf of Khambhat region, the city is surrounded by water bodies on three sides: Bavaliari creek, Sonaria creek and Gulf of Khambhat.Distance of DSIR from important cities: Mumbai (516 Kms), Delhi (815 Kms), Surat(278 Kms), Jamnagar(313 Kms), Rajkot(225 Kms) and Gandhinagar (128 Kms)
The regionencompassed a massive area of 35,000 hectares of which 14,000 hectares forms the processing area while the remaining falls under non-processing zone. With its massive size and the economic activities that it shall foresee, DSIR is envisaged to be twice the size of Mumbai and six times that of Shanghai.
To support the expected surge in trading and manufacturing activities within the region over the next three decades, a comprehensive proposal has been made to link the city to rest of the country and globe through every possible transport mode. Dholera shall enjoy high-speed road connectivity with Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar and Mumbai through NH8 highway and shall also be linked with Mumbai- Ahmedabad- Vadodara through expressway. To ensure global connectivity with the region, development of Dholera international airport has been approved for which 1700 hectares of land has been reserved 20 kilometers away from the smart city.
Another aspect that augments Dholera's connectivity is its easy linkage (at a distance of about 11 Kms) with the proposed port site via Ahmedabad – Bhavnagar highway. The port site is proposed to be developed on 2,057 hectares(appx) of government owned land. To enhance Dholera's connectivity further, direct rail routes area also being planned to and from the region.
